CPDThe structure of congenitally malformed hearts ranging from ‘simple’ holes in the heart to more complex lesions. Although there are no clinical images, the purpose of this course is to enable participants to have a better overall understanding of congenital heart defects as encountered in the clinical setting across the age range.
A series of 6 modules providing fundamental knowledge of the anatomy of morphology of the defects to help you in your practice, showing heart specimens and diagrams:
Module 1 : Introduces the anatomy of the normally structured heart to form the basis for understanding deviations from the normal when presented with a malformed heart. It includes a stepwise way of analysing any malformed heart using simple terminology.
Modules 2 & 3 : Heart defects with dominant left to right shunt such as septal defects.
Module 4 : Cyanotic defects : Tetralogy of Fallot, complete transposition.
Module 5 : Obstructive lesions : Valvar stenosis, coarctation.
Module 6 : Complex malformations including double outlet right ventricle, functionally univentricular heart.

- Learn the structure of the normal heart as a basis for understanding the structure of heart defects.
- Understand and differentiate between various types of heart defects including ‘complex’ malformations.
- Learn how to analyse a malformed heart systematically and reproducibly.
- Gain essential knowledge into the structure of heart defects to help them in your clinical work when viewing clinical imaging or interventional/surgical procedures.
Professor S Yen Ho is a consultant cardiac morphologist for Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, specialising in the study of the heart to better understand congenital and pathological cardiac anatomy.
Professor Ho is well renowned for her research and education projects and regularly speaks at international conferences.
Professor Ho’s research interests include:
- correlating morphology with imaging techniques, such as echocardiography
- MRI
- CT
- the anatomy of the heart relevant to interventional cardiology
- electrophysiology in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
- surgical treatments for these conditions.
