Professor Mark Mason

Professor Mark Mason is a consultant cardiologist at Harefield Hospital. Alongside his role, he is a medical director for Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.

He qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now part of Imperial College London). He then went on to complete cardiology training with the London Deanery.

Professor Mark Mason is an expert in coronary intervention. He is nationally recognised as a specialist in pacing lead extraction and has been specialist adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on the use of laser sheaths in pacing lead extraction.

He has extensive experience in managing patients with heart conditions such as:

• coronary artery disease
• mitral valve disease
• heart failure.

Professor Mason is an expert in several cardiac treatments and procedures:

• cardiac resynchronization therapy
• implanting pacemakers
• implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
• pacemakers and ICD extraction including the use of laser lead extraction.

In addition, he has a keen interest in sports cardiology, including screening for the risks associated with participation in endurance sport, particularly in older athletes

Professor Mark Mason is interested in monitoring patients with chronic heart failure through the use of technology such as the CardioMEMS implantable pulmonary artery pressure monitor.

Professor Mark Mason regularly lectures and chairs at meetings both in the UK and internationally. He has interest in teaching, and in developing the use of simulation-based training.

In 2018, Professor Mason was appointed as visiting clinical professor at Brunel University London.
