Specialises in coronary artery disease, PCI, aortic valve disease, TAVI and cardio-oncology.
Biography

Dr Simon Davies is a consultant interventional cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.  

He is a lead clinician for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), alongside being the director of the transcatheter aortic valve intervention (TAVI) programme. Dr Davies is also a key lead interventional cardiologist for the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) programme and national lead cardiologist for Refsum’s disease.  

Prior to joining Royal Brompton Hospital in 1994, he trained in Cambridge and London.  

Clinical expertise

Dr Davies has a wide array of clinical interests and expertise, that include:  

  • non-invasive coronary testing 
  • complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and biodegradable stents  
  • valve repair or replacement  
  • septal ablation of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy  
  • cardio-oncology 
  • retrieval of intracardiac foreign bodies 
  • mechanical circulatory support, including impella, balloon pumps, and ECMO. 
Research interests

Dr Davies has a special interest in cardio-oncology, which he has worked closely with his oncology, surgical, anaesthetic and intensive care colleagues at Royal Marsden Hospital for over 20 years. His interest in this field include:  

  • cardiovascular assessment of oncology patients before surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy to check their fitness levels and treat any cardiovascular condition that might interfere with their cancer treatment 
  • assessment of any cardiovascular side-effects of cancer treatments.  
  • when necessary, to stent narrowed coronary arteries and drain any collection of fluid around the heart. 
Publications

Dr Davies has published considerably on many clinical points of cardiology, that include: 

  • PCI and stenting 
  • TAVI 
  • platelet biology 
  • free radicals and reperfusion injury 
  • pulmonary microvascular permeability 
  • ventilatory changes in heart failure 
  • exercise capacity and quality of life 
  • patient safety in a cardiac catheter laboratory. 
Teaching

Dr Davies is an honorary senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.  

He is regularly invited to speak at cardiology and cardiac surgical conferences on an international level.  

Additionally, he has been awarded several research and academic prize.
