Specialises in managing and treating arrhythmias, including tachycardia and atrial fibrillation.
Biography

Dr Wajid Hussain is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. 

Dr Hussain received his honours in medicine and physiology from the University of Birmingham before training in cardiology in London. After his training he undertook research at Imperial College London and Columbia University, New York, focusing on heart rhythm disorders. His work in this area led to him being awarded a Young Investigator Prize at the European Society of Cardiology. 

After this, Dr Hussain was appointed consultant cardiac electrophysiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and has been able to facilitate the expansion of ablation services, particularly in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Clinical expertise

Dr Wajid Hussain has clinical expertise in multiple areas including;

  • the role of ablation in managing atrial fibrillation
  • transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography
  • managing all arrhythmias ranging from palpitations to all complex arrhythmias
  • pacemaker insertion, both single and dual chamber
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome
  • ventricular tachycardia
  • supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
Research interests

Dr Wajid Hussain has multiple research interests and projects that he is working on and contributing to. He is also the clinical governance lead for the arrhythmias care group at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

One of the main areas in which he has an interest is the safety and success rates for ablations and pacemakers. He regularly leads audits to improve these measures and minimise the risk of them. Furthermore, he is focused on improving the best treatment for all patients, including arrhythmia patients. 

He also leads an award-winning project focused on atrial fibrillation and the use of a hand-held device in community pharmacies.

Publications

Dr Wajid Hussain is an extremely accomplished consultant who has published many papers, both on basic science topics as well as clinical electrophysiology. He also contributes to multiple local and national research collaborations.

Teaching

Dr Wajid Hussain is part of many training and appraisal programs and is responsible for appraising and training junior doctors who are specialising in electrophysiology at the Trust. Furthermore, he teaches the management of arrhythmias for final year medical students from Imperial College, London. He also provides specialist training in electrophysiology to doctors in developing countries.Dr Hussain speaks at many regional, national and international meetings including lecturing at theRoyal Society of Medicine on a variety of topics including the management of atrial fibrillation and implantable defibrillators.
