Dr Rakesh Sharma

Consultant cardiologist
Specialises in heart failure, cardiac sarcoidosis, cardio-oncology and advanced pacing with biventricular pacemakers.
Biography

Dr Rakesh Sharma is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, where he is the clinical lead for heart failure.

He is a graduate of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School (now part of King’s College London) where he qualified with triple honours in 1995, before completing postgraduate training in tertiary care in London.

Dr Sharma completed his PhD in cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, after winning a fellowship with the British Heart Foundation. He is also a former recipient of the American Heart Association  Young Investigator Prize for his research.

Research interests

Dr Sharma is actively involved in research in heart failure and complex device therapy.

He is also an investigator for a randomised clinical trial on biventricular pacing at Royal Brompton Hospital.

Clinical expertise

In addition to being the clinical lead for heart failure at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, Dr Sharma has specialist expertise in:

  • advanced pacing (which includes the implantation of biventricular pacemakers and defribrillators)
  • cardiac sarcoidosis
  • cardio-oncology.
Publications

Dr Sharma is an author on over 100 peer-reviewed publications. This includes original research papers, reviews, abstracts, editorials and book chapters.

Teaching

Dr Sharma regularly speaks at national and international conferences. This includes the;

  • American Heart Association
  • British Cardiovascular Society
  • British Society for Heart Failure
  • European Society of Cardiology.
